Students in the Perry County School District will be required to carry clear backpacks when classes resume for the 2026-2027 school year under a policy announced this week.
The policy is intended to improve campus safety, cut down on prohibited items, make security checks more efficient and support a safer learning environment, according to the announcement.
Backpacks must be made of clear plastic or vinyl and must be completely see-through. Mesh backpacks are not permitted, and neither are tinted or colored backpacks that limit visibility.
Students may personalize their bags with small keychains, name tags or school-approved decorations that do not obstruct the view inside.
Students may carry one small non-clear pouch, roughly 6 by 9 inches, inside the clear backpack for personal hygiene items, money, keys and medication when school policy permits. The pouch is not to be used to conceal prohibited items.
Textbooks, notebooks, folders, school supplies, Chromebooks and chargers, water bottles and lunches are permitted.
Weapons of any kind, lighters and matches, tobacco and vaping products, fireworks, alcohol and illegal drugs are prohibited, along with anything else barred under the student code of conduct.
Backpacks may be visually inspected as students enter the building, and random searches may be conducted during the year.
Lockers, backpacks and personal belongings remain subject to search under school board policy.
