Perry races drew challengers as election qualifying closed this week

Qualifying has closed for Perry County’s 2026 party primaries, setting the ballot for a full slate of Democratic contests and one Republican race for the County Commission. The primary election is scheduled for May 19.

Board of Education Race

In the only Board of Education race on the county ballot, incumbent District 5 member Vera Davis of Uniontown will face challenger Tiffanie Lewis, also of Uniontown, in the Democratic primary.

Countywide Democratic Races

Two Democrats qualified for sheriff: incumbent Sheriff Roy J. Fikes of Uniontown and challenger Robert Sykes, also of Uniontown.

For coroner, incumbent Edward Terrell Jones of Uniontown will appear on the Democratic ballot.

Incumbent Revenue Commissioner Arthurita Kynard Smith of Marion is the lone Democratic qualifier for that countywide office.

County Commission — Democratic Races

All three County Commission districts on the Democratic side will see activity:

  • District 1: Longtime Commissioner Albert F. Turner of Marion drew a challenge from Donald Bennett of Marion.
  • District 2: Commissioner Anthony J. Long of Marion will face Ernest L. Donaldson of Marion in the Democratic primary.
  • District 3: Democrat Donald Nichols of Marion qualified without opposition for his party’s nomination.

Republican Primary Race

Republicans will have one county race on their primary ballot in Perry County. Incumbent Commissioner Brett Harrison and challenger Katie Burks both qualified for the GOP nomination in Commission District 3.

Democratic Executive Committee Candidates

Democrats also filled out their county executive committee ballots:

  • District 1: Carlton L. Hogue, Carla J. Harris, Vinnie Royster, Cynthia H. Hogue, Tommy Kennie, Walta Mae Kennie, Jocelyn Tubbs-Turner, and Edd Miree, all of Marion
  • District 2: Sandra J. Munden, Jerildine Melton, and Floresteen Smith, all of Marion
  • District 3: Patrick Essex, Florence Parker, and Clevie B. Parker of Marion, and Berlinder Blevins of Selma
  • District 4: Henrietta E. Jones and Jamaal Hunter of Uniontown, and Jeff Easley, Melvin Turner, and Barbara Howze of Marion
  • District 5: Brenda Joyce Cooke, La-Tanya Hunter Williams, Roy Fikes, and Colette Fikes, all of Uniontown

Voting Information

Sample ballots, precinct information, and details on absentee and in-person voting will be available from the Hale County Probate Office and on the Alabama Secretary of State’s website.

Voters must be registered in Alabama to participate in the primary. Residents who need to check their status or update their registration may do so online or by contacting the county Board of Registrars.
