Capital murder suspect apprehended in Bibb, Perry County Jail closed after midnight escape this weekend

Darren Tyrone Brooks, Jr. was apprehended in Bibb County on Monday.

Darren Tyrone “Dog Face” Brooks Jr., who escaped from the Perry County Jail shortly after midnight Sunday, is back in custody after surrendering to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department on Monday morning, according to a press statement from District Attorney Robert H. Turner Jr. The D.A. said Brooks was taken into custody “without harm” following cooperation among multiple agencies and the families involved.

As of Monday, there were no inmates housed at the Marion facility. In an email, Turner said Sheriff Roy Fikes deemed the jail unsafe and made the call to transfer inmates until the security concerns are addressed by the county commission, adding that all inmates have been temporarily housed elsewhere.

Brooks, who is under a Perry County grand-jury indictment on two counts of capital murder stemming from the Jan. 5, 2023 shooting death of Christopher Warren Lewis, also faces an April 2025 misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault and a new charge of second-degree escape filed Monday in district court, records show.

Perry County Commission Chairman Albert Turner Jr. posted Monday that he had ordered immediate repairs to the damaged cell block at the James Hood Detention Center and said additional fencing is being considered. He estimated the repair cost at under $1,500 and said work would be completed this week. Turner’s post also criticized jail staffing and monitoring; the Sheriff’s Office has not responded publicly to those claims.
