Resignation was accepted by board after special called meeting Wed., Sept. 10
Greene County Schools Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones confirmed on Tuesday that Marion Mayor Dexter Hinton has resigned from his position with the Greene County School System following a called meeting of the Board of Education held on Wednesday, September 10.
Dr. Jones told the Times-Standard-Herald that Hinton “no longer works in the district,” adding that the only information he could share was that Hinton resigned at that meeting. When asked whether any other actions were taken or if the matter had been referred to an outside agency, Jones responded, “Nothing I can discuss.”
In June 2024, the Greene County Board of Education approved Hinton’s transfer from his position as Modern Manufacturing teacher at Greene County Career Center to a Career and Technical Education position at Robert Brown Middle School for the 2024–2025 school year, following a recommendation by Dr. Jones.
In a related matter, Dr. Jones tendered his own resignation to the GCBOE during their meeting on August 27 of this year, when he announced that he had accepted a position with the Dallas County school system. He will remain Superintendent in Greene County until September 30.
A person familiar with the situation, who regularly attends Greene County Board of Education meetings, told the Times-Standard-Herald that the September 10 meeting was held in a closed session, characterized as a “hearing,” and that the result of the session was Hinton’s resignation.
In the days following the meeting, community members in Greene County took to social media to raise questions about the resignation and to call for transparency from school officials. The Times-Standard-Herald has been unable to independently verify the allegations shared online and is continuing to seek additional information from the board.
Hinton continues to serve as mayor of Marion and will face challenger Travis Perkins in a runoff election for mayor, scheduled for Tuesday, September 23.
