Uniontown Public Library will host award winning journalist tonight

The Uniontown Public Library will serve as the host site for award-winning journalist and author Miranda Spivack for a book signing and community conversation on Thursday, May 15, 2025, kicking off at 5:00 p.m. This free event is open to the public and will take place at the Uniontown Library.

Spivack will share highlights from her newest book, Backroom Deals in Our Backyards: How Government Secrecy Harms Our Communities and the Local Heroes Fighting Back, which features the powerful stories of Uniontown activists, including Benjamin Eaton, President of Blackbelt Citizens Fighting for Health and Justice, and other local advocates. Attendees will hear Spivack read excerpts from the book, followed by a Q&A session led by Portia Shepherd. The event will celebrate local advocacy and shed light on how communities like Uniontown are pushing back against environmental and political injustice. Free copies of the book will be available while supplies last, and guests will have the opportunity to get their books signed by the author. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

“This is a special chance for the people of Uniontown to connect with someone who really gets the power of local voices and how important it is to share our stories,” said Portia Shepherd of Blackbelt Women Rising, who’s both in the book and helping put the event together. “We’re excited about this and can’t wait to see you soon! The event starts at 5 p.m., with the Q&A kicking off around 5:45 p.m. For more information contact Blackbelt Women Rising (334)231-7050.
