Jade Turner and Laura Beth Goode were each awarded the Eleanor C. Drake Scholarship last month. The ceremony, organized by the Perry County Historical and Preservation Society, was held at the old Marion Female Seminary. Friends and family of the students were in attendance to hear essays written by the two young women. The scholarship ceremony was followed by an ice cream social. This event was sponsored by Blue Bell, FoodValu, and Pepsi. The scholarship was established in 2023 by the Perry County Historical and Preservation Society. Each year a high school student from each of Perry County’s schools is awarded a scholarship for writing a winning essay on some aspect of Perry County history. Both young women chose to write about their grandfathers, with Turner writing about her grandfather, attorney Robert Turner, Sr., and Goode writing about her grandfather, former Judson College president the late David Potts.
