Selma teen charged with escape attempt, assault on officer at PREP Center

Complaint alleges he used a shank trying to escape and seriously injured a correctional officer

An 18-year-old Selma man was arrested on a warrant Oct. 16 on charges of first-degree robbery, escape and assault stemming from a Sept. 29 incident in which a correctional officer at a facility near Uniontown was wounded, according to Perry County District Court records.

Damon Kanard Hooks Jr., 18, of Selma is charged with robbery in the first degree, a Class A felony; escape in the first degree, a Class B felony; and assault in the first degree, a Class B felony.

In a complaint sworn Oct. 16, a Perry County Sheriff’s Office investigator alleges that on Sept. 29, Hooks, armed with “a cutting instrument, a shank,” used or threatened force against a correctional officer while taking or trying to take the officer’s wallet and keys.

The complaint alleges Hooks used the shank “in attempting to escape from custody.” In its assault count, it alleges he caused serious physical injury to the officer, listing “puncturing wounds to his left arm, a dislocated shoulder, and possible serious head injuries.”

A Perry County Sheriff’s Office incident report filed in the case puts the incident at the U.S. Highway 80 address of the Perry County PREP Center, the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles’ reentry program at the former Perry County Correctional Facility, and lists the location type as a jail or prison. It lists one wallet as recovered.

The case was filed in district court Oct. 16, the day the complaint was sworn. The court appointed an attorney to represent Hooks in an order entered Oct. 19, court records show.

Court records dated Oct. 19 listed Hooks as jailed with no bond amount set. Aniah’s Law and preliminary hearings were set for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 17, court records show. Aniah’s Law allows judges to deny bail on certain violent felony charges.
