Myrtle Couch Dunn, 87, of Demopolis passed away August 1 at Woodhaven Manor.
She was born September 24, 1938, in Marion Junction and grew up on a dairy farm near Scotts Station in Perry County. Her family moved to Demopolis in 1951 after her father’s death.
Myrtle worked from a young age to help support her family, first as a waitress at 13 and later at Marengo Mills after leaving high school early.
In 1955 she married Harold Dunn of Linden, and together they raised three children and operated two service stations on Highway 80 in Demopolis.
In her 40s, Myrtle earned her high school diploma and studied nursing at Hobson State Technical College. She worked for many years at the hospital and in nursing homes in Marengo County, and nursing became one of the great joys of her life.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Demopolis, where she served as librarian for many years. She enjoyed politics, taking part in several gubernatorial campaigns and serving in the Alabama Silver Haired Legislature, and she shared a love of genealogy with her sisters, tracing the family’s roots to before Alabama and Tennessee statehood.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents, Bob and Ethel Couch; her daughter, Kathy; and her siblings, Martha Massey, Dot Whitfield and Robert Couch.
She is survived by her sister, Ethel Walker; her sons, Rob (Lisa) and Rick (Andrea) Dunn; her grandchildren, Billy Broach, Nicole Lynn (Gene), Tyler Broach (Margaret), Audra Broach-Jones (Brian), Kevin Dunn (Kirby), Leanne Liebe (Chris), Connor Dunn (Maggie), Wesley Dunn (Danielle) and Ashley Dunn; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends special thanks to the staff of Woodhaven Nursing Home for their loving care.
Visitation was held Saturday, August 8, at First Baptist Church of Demopolis, with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. and Brother Carl Williams officiating. Burial followed at Linden Memorial Park.
