Mae Elizabeth Wilcox, 95, of the Ocmulgee community in Perry County died July 20.
Wilcox was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Selma, the daughter of James Russell Williams and Eula Mae Williams. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and she was raised in Marion Junction by her maternal grandparents, Joseph E. Smith and Emma Eugenia Smith. She was baptized at Marion Junction Baptist Church.
She attended Marion Junction Grammar School and graduated from Orrville High School in 1948. She then attended a Catholic business college in Selma. In 1951 she went to work for Zeigler’s, retiring from the company’s bookkeeping department on July 31, 1993.
She met Dean Wilcox at Marion Junction Baptist Church, and they married Feb. 26, 1956, and attended there for many years. In later years she attended Ocmulgee Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, cross-stitching, baking, canning, spending time with family and friends, and her collection of plants and cactus.
Survivors include her husband, Dean Wilcox; daughters, Beth Miller (Jim) of Panama City, Florida, and Carol Wilcox of Ocmulgee; granddaughters, Sara Thrash (Jason) of Deatsville and Rachel Hanks (Neil) of Chattanooga, Tennessee; a great-grandson, Tate Thrash of Deatsville; and cousins, Audra Westbrook (John) of Marion Junction and Glenda Brock of Opelika, and their children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by aunts and uncles Zoe Williams, Howard Smith (Stelle), Edward Smith (Margaret), Gene Smith (Anna Mae), Reuben Smith (Willie Dean) and Mattie Belle Adams (Irving).
Visitation was held Wednesday, July 22, at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home in Selma. Graveside services were held Thursday, July 23, at Marion Junction Cemetery, with Bill Goodwin officiating.
