Uniontown police have arrested two suspects in a Saturday, July 18 shooting near R.C. Hatch High School that struck two occupied vehicles following a community basketball tournament.
Police Chief Michael Kiser said Sherman Deshuwn Cain, 26, of Uniontown, and a 16-year-old juvenile are each charged with two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. The juvenile is not being identified because of his age.
According to Kiser, the juvenile was attending the basketball tournament at R.C. Hatch when he felt intimidated by two men at the game and called Cain for help. Kiser said the two devised a plan in which Cain told the juvenile where to stand so he would not be struck, and the pair then fired on a vehicle as it approached a stop sign near the school.
Two vehicles were hit, one of them carrying a mother and her children. No one was injured.
Kiser said the shooting was “not acceptable in our community,” particularly following a youth basketball game near a school.
In a statement posted the day after the shooting, the Uniontown Police Department said it was investigating the case “relentlessly” and asked anyone with information to contact the department or to remain anonymous by calling CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP.
Both suspects were being held without bond pending a hearing under Aniah’s Law, according to police.
