Brown University shooting victim had Greensboro ties

Ella Cook

Family and friends in Greensboro are mourning Ella Cook, a Brown University student killed in a campus shooting on Saturday, noting that she had deep family roots here.

Cook is the granddaughter of Deane Poelnitz Cook, whose father was longtime Greensboro attorney, the late Richard Poelnitz.

In a post from Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, where the Cook family worships, parishioners remembered Ella as “a tremendous and bright light” and “such a light and such a witness” at Brown. Friends interviewed by Birmingham television station ABC 33/40 described her as driven, joyful and “one of the greatest people ever.”

Cook was a sophomore at Brown at the time of her death.
