FMS’s King named Alabama D3 high school assistant principal of the year

The Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals (AASP), an affiliate of the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS), proudly recognizes Dr. Theresa King as the 2025 High School Assistant Principal of the Year for District 3.

The honor came as a complete and humbling surprise to Dr. King, who has never before received such recognition beyond her local school-level acknowledgments. Known for her quiet dedication and tireless service, she shared that the award was “a total shock,” as she never anticipated receiving recognition on this level.

A native of Marion, Alabama (Perry County), Dr. King is a 1994 graduate of Francis Marion High School, where she now serves as the proud PreK–12 Assistant Principal. Her educational journey began at Alabama State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Special Education, Master’s Degrees in School Counseling and Educational Administration, and an Education Specialist Degree in Educational Administration. She later completed her Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Samford University.

With over 20 years of service in education, Dr. King has worked in multiple capacities across elementary, middle, and high school levels. Her experience includes serving as a Jobs for Alabama Graduates (JAG) and Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Specialist, Special Services Teacher, 21st Century Site Coordinator, School Counselor, Summer School Administrator, and now Assistant Principal. She has served in Gwinnett County Public Schools (Georgia), Selma City Schools, and Jefferson County Public Schools (Birmingham).

Dr. King leads with a heart of service. Her leadership philosophy is rooted in Servant Leadership and Transformational Leadership, exemplifying loyalty, dedication, and commitment to students, staff, and her community. From January to May of 2025, Dr. King stepped in as Interim Principal at Francis Marion School, demonstrating her willingness to serve wherever called. Under her leadership as both Assistant Principal and Interim Principal for the 2024–2025 School Year, the school’s report card overall grade score increased from 68 to 79, reflecting her strong vision, dedication, and commitment to school improvement.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. King is an active member of several professional organizations, including CLAS, AASP, AAMSP (Alabama Association of Middle School Principals), AAESA (Alabama Association of Elementary School Administrators), ALACASE (Alabama Council of Administrators of Special Education), and the Alabama Counseling Association.

A woman of strong faith and purpose, Dr. King is an active member of Eagle Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Marion, where she ministers through song. In 2008–2009, she recorded her first gospel CD, collaborating with prodigy musician Ronald D. Bryant and renowned musicians Marcus Williams (former drummer for Tyler Perry and Candi Staton) and Vance Taylor (keyboardist for Frankie Beverly & Maze).

Dr. King is the proud daughter of Mr. Rayfield King and the late Mrs. Rosa King, and sister to five siblings — Tim, Rayfield Jr., Raymond, Christopher, and Michael. She is the devoted mother of two children, Immanuel and Faith, and adoring grandmother to Serenity.

A member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Dr. King enjoys coordinating events, organizing projects, traveling, learning, empowering others, speaking, singing, and spending time with her family. She lives by a powerful mission: “To change lives, save lives, and give life through my God-given gifts and many talents.”
