U.S. Army National Guard Capt. Tamara Brewer of Marion has been named Alabama’s October “Veteran of the Month,” an honor announced in a video released by U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s office.
Brewer, who grew up in Mobile, enlisted in the Alabama Army National Guard with a goal of helping in times of crisis after seeing the toll that hurricanes and other disasters take on the Gulf Coast. She entered basic training shortly before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, a moment that strengthened her commitment to serve.
In 2008, Brewer deployed to Iraq, where she served for a year as Headquarters Company Commander. She received the Bronze Star for her leadership during that tour. After returning home, she put her focus on service in the Black Belt, where she has been active in community projects and veterans’ causes.
Friends and colleagues know Brewer as a strong voice for art therapy. She has used photography and graphic design as creative outlets, and she has shared those skills with others— designing logos for Alabama businesses and documenting milestones such as weddings and graduations.
The monthly recognition is part of a program run by Tuberville’s office that highlights Alabama veterans for military service and community contributions. Constituents may submit nominations by emailing press_office@tuberville.senate.gov.
A video highlighting Brewer’s story was released with the announcement.
