Uniontown certified its municipal run-off results Tuesday, September 30, following the official canvassing at noon in the Uniontown City Auditorium. Under Alabama Code §§ 11-46-55(a) and 11-46- 46, the City Council reviewed returns and counted any valid provisional ballots before declaring the winners.
The tightest race was in District 2, where Dudley Long entered canvassing with a one-vote lead over Sherman Norfleet, 110 to 109. Provisional ballots added one vote to each candidate’s total, and the margin held. The final certified tally is Long 111, Norfleet 110. With Tuesday’s certification, Long becomes the next District 2 councilmember.
Provisional ballots can and sometimes do change razor-thin margins, which is why the canvass mattered in this race. In this case, they did not alter the outcome.
The other run-off results were affirmed as well. Ron Miller’s win in the mayor’s race over Portia Shepherd stands; city totals reported Tuesday night were 546 to 481. In District 1, Eddie Ward prevailed over LeVirgil Bell; city totals reported were 135 to 111. Those two contests were not close, and Tuesday’s canvass confirmed the winners.
