Marion will seat two new council members after Tuesday’s election; Uniontown will see runoff for mayor, two council positions


Municipal elections in Perry County produced mixed results Tuesday, with several contests decided outright while others will head to a September runoff.
In Marion, the mayor’s race will go to a runoff between incumbent mayor Dexter Hinton, who led with 488 votes, and Travis Perkins, who received 338. Fairest Cureton had 102 votes and Chad Moore finished with 152.
Council results included a clear victory in District 1, where Jeremy Arrington received 167 votes to Janet Cole’s 65. In District 2, Tommy Leon Kennie (109) and Edd Miree (70) advanced to a runoff, while Lakeisha Shaw collected 65 votes. District 3 saw Ann Lecroy prevail with 79 votes over Charles Sanders with 56. In District 4, Willie Jackson won with 126 votes to Vinnie Royster’s 92. District 5 was decided in the first round as well, with Stanley Kennie receiving 155 votes to Sharon Horton’s 78 and Joe Frazer’s 12.
Uniontown
In Uniontown, the fiveway mayor’s race narrowed to a runoff between Ron Miller, who received 247 votes, and Portia Shepherd, who received 400. Geneva “Nee Jones” Watts received 125, Calvin Jordan 95, and Don Moore 63.
For Uniontown council seats, District 1 will see a runoff between Eddie Ward (91) and LeVirgil Bell (87), while Fernando Deon Raby received 29. District 2 also heads to a runoff between Sherman Norfleet (81) and Dudley Long (70), while Timothy Shepherd received 45. Cynthia Mims was unopposed in District 3. In District 4, Theotis Dudley defeated Henrietta “Sis” Jones 86 to 47. In District 5, Kimberly Bell defeated Donald “Shug” Anderson 149 to 49.
Runoff Schedule
Runoff elections are scheduled statewide for Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Absentee ballot deadlines begin September 5, when ballots and supplies must be delivered to city clerks. The last day to register to vote in the runoff is September 8. Public testing of electronic vote counters begins on September 9. Beginning September 15, qualified voters without acceptable photo ID may be issued a provisional absentee ballot.
The deadline to apply for a regular absentee ballot is September 18. Voters may apply for an emergency absentee ballot until September 22, and that day is also the final deadline to deliver a completed absentee ballot by the close of business.
The runoff election will take place on September 23. Election officials must complete required canvassing and certification by September Dexter Hinton Travis Perkins 30.
