The first phase of restoration work at Lilly (also spelled Lillie) Grove Baptist Church Cemetery has been completed, thanks to grant funding from the Alabama Tombigbee RC&D Council in Camden.
The project focused on clearing years of overgrowth, including thick vines and invasive kudzu, which had overtaken much of the cemetery. Regular herbicide treatments and mechanical clearing have dramatically improved the appearance and accessibility of the site.
Kudzu removal will remain an ongoing effort, as the plant often returns from underground roots even after initial clearing. Continued monthly spraying and upkeep are planned to prevent future overgrowth.
The Lilly Grove Church family expressed their appreciation to the Alabama Tombigbee staff, board members, and state legislators who helped make the project possible. Additional phases are planned as the work continues.
