The Perry County Historical Society will present the Eleanor Drake Memorial Scholarship in a ceremony today, Thursday, April 17. The public is invited to an ice cream social from 5:30 to 7:00pm at the Marion Female Seminary.
The society will be celebrating two high school seniors, Laura Beth Goode of Marion Academy and Jade Turner of Francis Marion School. Both students have written essays on a topic of local history and have been selected as winners of the 2025 Eleanor Drake Memorial Scholarship.
Both essays center on education in the College City of Perry County, Alabama. Both Goode and Turner’s essays contain rich, personal details pertaining to their own grandfathers’ contributions to education. Laura Beth Goode is the granddaughter of David Potts, and Jade Turner is the granddaughter of Robert Turner, Sr. David Potts is the former president of the now shuttered Judson College. Robert Turner, Sr., a practicing attorney in his family’s law practice, Turner & Turner, and is the father of District Attorney Robert Turner, Jr.
Complimentary Blue Bell ice cream, Pepsi Cola, and light refreshments will be provided following the award presentation.
