Dedication ceremony in honor of late Civil Rights leader will be held Feb. 28
The Marion Post Office is officially being renamed the Albert Turner Sr. Post Office in honor of the late civil rights leader and former Perry County Commissioner. The dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday, February 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at the post office in Marion. The date holds special significance as it would have marked Albert Turner Sr.’s 89th birthday.
Turner played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement, including leading the mule-drawn wagon carrying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s body during his funeral procession. As the Alabama Field Director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Turner Sr. was instrumental in advancing voting rights for African Americans and ensuring equal representation across Alabama.
Congresswoman Terri Sewell introduced the legislation to rename the post office, which passed unanimously in both the House and Senate. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law on January 4, 2025.
