Willie James Carr has been charged with multiple crimes in Perry County, Alabama, including the murder of Hugh Lee Sanders, which occurred on April 2, 2021. The charges against Carr include murder and receiving stolen property in the first degree. He was arrested on January 16 by State Bureau of Investigation Agent Zachary Keith Sievering.
The murder charge stems from the fatal shooting of Sanders, who was struck in the abdomen by a firearm. Carr was arrested on a nobond warrant signed by Judge Deanna Waltman. According to court records, this case had remained unresolved for nearly four years before charges were filed against Carr.
The murder shocked the Marion community when Sanders was gunned down near Siloam Baptist Church, where he had worked for many years as a custodian.
In addition to the murder charge, Carr faces allegations of possessing stolen property. On January 11, 2025, authorities allege he intentionally received or retained a black 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, valued at $22,500, knowing the vehicle had been stolen. This property, allegedly belonging to Allstate Insurance Company, had not been restored to its rightful owner. Court documents allege Carr had reasonable grounds to believe the property was stolen and did not take steps to return it.
Carr is currently being held without bond. His next court proceeding, a plea docket, is scheduled for February 19.
