School board sues former teacher for $5k signing bonus

The Perry County Board of Education has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against former employee Rose Mary Wolf, claiming she failed to fulfill the terms of her employment agreement and owes repayment of a $5,000 signing bonus. The complaint was filed on November 21, 2024, in the District Court of Perry County and alleges that Wolf violated the terms of her contract after working approximately three months of the agreed one-year term.

According to court documents, Wolf entered into a contractual relationship with the Perry County Board of Education on August 2, 2024, to provide teaching and educational services. As part of her employment, she received a $5,000 signing bonus under the Perry County School System’s Highly Qualified/ Certified Recruitment Signing Bonus Incentive Policy. This policy required teachers who accepted the bonus to remain employed for at least one full year, with a clause stating that the bonus would be repaid if the teacher left before the completion of that term.

The Board of Education alleges that Wolf submitted a notice of resignation, ending her employment after only three months. As a result, the Board is seeking a judgment for the $5,000 signing bonus repayment, as stipulated in the agreement. The lawsuit also includes a claim for set-off, allowing the Board to offset any unpaid wages owed to Wolf against the $5,000 repayment.

As of press time, Wolf had not yet filed an answer to the lawsuit.
