On June 13, 2024, the Alabama Historical Commission confirmed that the Lincolnite Club, Inc. was selected as a recipient of a $50,000 State Legislature Education Trust Fund Grant Award funded by the State Legislature. The grant program will be administered by the Alabama Historical Commission.
The overall purpose of the 2024 Grant Program is to promote preservation, improvement, and educational programming at historic sites in Alabama like Lincoln Normal School and to support the preservation of Alabama history in communities. All grant project work must be done in conformance with required rehabilitation standards of the Department of the Interior. The grant period of performance is July 1, 2024- December 31, 2025.
Our grant project will support the preservation, maintenance, accessibility, and safety of Marion Nutrition Center. Expendituresof grant funds will include roof replacement, interior painting, abatement and eradication of mole, plumbing, floor and ceiling tiles replacement, electric repairs, and repairs of windows and doors. Educational programming activities and enrichment opportunities will be incorporated for community students and incoming youth community service project groups.
Marion Nutrition Center is located on the historic Lincoln Normal School Campus in the Classroom Addition Building that is owned by the Lincolnite Club, Inc. The Center is managed and operated by the City of Marion by means of a collaborative exchange partnership agreement with the Lincolnite Club, Inc. It includes the use of the facility by the City for providing the Lincolnite Club in-kind supporting services. Meals are provided for senior citizens on weekdays. The project will improve working relationships between the City and the Lincolnite Club and will also enable them to provide better services to meet the needs of the citizens of Perry County.
Mrs. Velma Essex, the President of Perry County Education Retirees Association is optimist about the success of the grant project. She wrote, “This grant award will promote and enhance the preservation, maintenance, usefulness, accessibility, and safety of Marion Nutrition Site. The Perry County Education Retirees Association agrees that this service will definitely have an impact on the health status of the community. This would be a means of making sure senior citizens of our local and surrounding community receive the proper nutritional foods needed to maintain good health.”
The Lincolnite Club, Inc. expresses appreciation to the Alabama Legislature and Governor Ivey for funding the grant program, the Alabama Historical Commission, and all other participants and supporters of the project to promote the mission of the Lincolnite Club, Inc. to preserve, revitalize, and perpetuate the legacy of the historic Lincoln Normal School.
