Area in Perry, nearby counties A Black Belt Partnership Meeting will take place on Friday, December 1, from 9 AM to 12 noon at 2 Lawrence Street in Selma. Presented by The Conservation Fund, in collaboration with the Mayors of Marion, Selma, White Hall, and Montgomery. The meeting will convene between four Black Belt counties: Perry, Dallas, Lowndes, and Montgomery. The meeting is meant to discuss each county’s interests in preserving local lands and their history, particularly as it relates to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
The Conservation Fund’s efforts led to the Black Belt being designated as a National Heritage Area in January of this year, and has held similar summits in the past to highlight little known heritage sites throughout the region. The Conservation Fund is also behind an upcoming documentary with Southern Exposure Films that will focus on Marion’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. The Conservation Fund was also awarded a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Rural Placemaking Innovation Challenge (RPIC) intended to protect civil rights landmarks, including in Perry County and the city of Marion.
