Marion citizens now have access to a FEMA-certified storm shelter, located adjacent to the Inez-Barnett- Coretta Scott King Center on AL Highway 14. The new facility, secured by Commissioner Anthony Long using American Rescue Plan funding, can protect up to 100 residents from inclement weather. Protection ranges all the way to category five storms, as rated by the National Weather Service.
In addition to protection, the shelter has amenities to those seeking shelter there. A handicap-accessible restroom and gas generator are already available, with handicap-accessible ramps and railing coming soon in compliance with the American Disability Act.
The Perry County Highway Department will be tasked with maintenance of the facility, as well as opening and closing based upon notifications from the NWS. Previously, the former National Guard Armory has been used in the event of severe weather for temporary shelter, also secured by Long during his time as mayor of Marion. The storm shelter is a new addition to a growing number of shelters in surrounding municipalities, including Hamburg, Sprott, and Newbern in Hale County.
