Alma L. King died Sept. 19 at the age of 63. She was born July 5, 1959 in Greensboro to the late Bernice King and Emery Paige. She received her early education at Walter Reed Grammar School in Chicago and Greensboro East High School, where she was a graduate of the class of 1977.
After high school, she atttended C.A. Fredd Technical college, Shelton State Community College, and Alabama A&M University.
She was a devoted member of Greenleaf Missionary Baptist Church. She accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of the Rev. Dan Hope. She served as a church trustee and sang alto/tenor in the choir.
She worked in the Hale County School System, the Alternative Learning Center, and the Juvenile Detention Correctional Center. She served as president of the Hale County Education Support Professional Organization and was a regular attendee at local board of education meetings. She was a delegate to the Alabama Education Association’s meeting every December until her retirement in 2005, as well as some sessions of the National Education Association.
She was an active member of the L.A.B.O.R.S. Club (Ladies Aiming to Bridge Openness for Relief through Service). Raising scholarship funds for youth to attend college was her passion while serving as a L.A.B.O.R.S. member. She is preceded in death by her mother, Bernice King; stepfather, Henry Webster; father, Emery Paige; grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Earnest Sr. and Ethel King and Mr. And Mrs. Willie and Sarah Paige; brother, Peter Davis; aunts, Mary Jones, Rebecca Henry, Lillie Scott, and Willie Mae Horton; uncles, J.C. King, Earnest King, Jr., Willie Paige, Charlie Clark, Willie Clark, and David Clark; and her mentor/teacher, Mrs. Barbara Smith.
Survivors include her sisters, Angela, Debra, and Michelle, all of Chicago; brothers, Ronnie, of Greensboro, and Barry (Sabrina), of Chicago; aunts, Hattie King, Mary Louise (Lovell) Briggins, and Erma King; uncles, Lee Andrew King and Emmett Paige; nieces, nephews, and cousins; goddaughter, Andrea Hogan; godfather, the Rev. Samuel (Nell) Garner; friends; Greenleaf Baptist Church Family; close friends/brothers, Kenneth Webb and Christopher Smith; and the Hale Community as a whole. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 1 at Greenleaf Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Earlier Agnew officiating and Washington and Paige Mortuary directing.
